Yesterday Globe Police served warrants to four inmates at the Gila County Jail:

29 year old Keith Hopkins had outstanding warrants for failure to comply on charges of disorderly conduct, assault and shoplifting.

33 year old Lee Deiters  had warrants for disorderly conduct and assault.

48 year old Joseph Root was arrested on a failure to comply warrant for criminal trespass.

23 year old Soane Folau had a failure to comply warrant for criminal nuisance.

Miami Police arrested 42 year old Jessica Garcia on a child support warrant.

Maintenance Project on SR73

Drivers on State Route 73 on the White Mountain Apache Reservation between Hon-Dah and Whiteriver need to be aware of a pavement maintenance project starting Monday (February 10).

Work hours will be 6:am to 6:pm daily through February 21. You can expect narrowed traffic lanes, a reduced speed limit and possible delays of up to 20 minutes.

Apache Bow Hunters 'Stump Shoot'

The Apache Bow Hunters “Stump Shoot” will be held this Sunday (February 9).

Registration starts at 7:am. The fee is $25 for adults and $20 for youth.

The event will be held at the Apache Bow Hunters Archery Range in Globe.

Legends of Superior Trail Ecotourism Festival

The Legends of Superior Trail Ecotourism Festival takes place this Saturday (February 8). It starts at 9:am at the Magma Club.

There will be guided hikes, group equestrian rides, a group mountain bike ride, a history lecture series, barbecue luncheon and an evening ghost walk in downtown Superior.

Sheriff's Posse Sweetheart Dance on Saturday

The Gila County Sheriff’s Reserve Posse Sweetheart Dance is Saturday from 6 to Midnight at the Gila County Fairgrounds.

Tickets are $25 a couple and $15 for singles. They are available at Bacon’s Boots and Saddles, the Gila County Sheriff’s Office, Posse members or at the door.

First Friday Program Presents Love Letters of Governor George W.P. Hunt

The First Friday program at the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum on February 7 features the love letters of Governor George W.P. Hunt and Duette Ellison Hunt.

For this Valentine program, impersonators Don Shields and Mary Brown will present the story behind the marriage of Arizona’s first Governor and the daughter of a well known rancher.

The program begins at 6:30pm.

AARP Driver Safety Class to be Held in Globe

An AARP Driver Safety Class will be held in Globe on Thursday, April 10. 

The course is a classroom driver refresher course for drivers 50 years of age and older. It will be from 9:am to 1:pm at the United Methodist Church.

Class topics include the effects that aging has on driving and what can be done to adapt to those changes.

The cost of the class for AARP members is $15 and is $20 for non-members.

Help Charles A. Bejarano School's Recycling Competition

Charles A Bejarano Elementary School  is participating in FundingFactory’s 2014 Recycling Rumble. It is competing against Washington Elementary School in San Gabriel, California.

You can help by dropping off laser and inkjet cartridges and used cell phones, mp3 players, GPS devices and digital cameras between now and April 15.

The winning organization between the two will earn a 25% fundraising bonus. The top recycler nationwide will also receive $5,000 from the national fundraising through recycling program FundingFactory.

Collection boxes are located at the Claypool Post Office and the Miami Post Office. Or items may be dropped off at Charles A. Bejarano school on Ragus Road.

BLS Releases Employment and Wage Information for Arizona Counties

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics has released information about employment and wages in Arizona for the second quarter of 2013.

Greenlee County was the only county in Arizona with average weekly wages above the national average. Average weekly wages in Greenlee County were $1,093, while the national average was $921.

The average weekly wage in Gila County was $713. It was $734 in Pinal County and $919 in Maricopa County.

AARP Offers Help with Tax Return Preparation

The AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide service is available for people who can’t afford professionally prepared tax returns.

AARP’s  service has become the largest free tax assistance and preparation program in the nation. It gives special assistance to seniors but helps people at low to moderate income levels.

Last night Globe Police arrested 31 year old Marissa Cruiel for aggravated assault/domestic violence and child abuse.

48 year old Joseph Root was arrested for criminal trespassing at a residence on South Highland.

The Gila County Task Force arrested two people at a traffic stop late yesterday afternoon. 22 year old Alexandria Mabbit and 26 year old Sadie Smith were charged with possession and transportation of a dangerous drug for sale, possession and transportation of narcotic drugs for sale, and money laundering.

24 year old Thomas Measeles was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Obituaries

Victor Belvado passed away February 3 at his home in San Carlos. He was 52. He is survived by his wife Veronica; 9 children; 3 brothers; 3 sisters; and 5 grandchildren.
The wake for Victor Belvado is Friday (February 7) at 4:pm at the Belvado residence. Rosary is at 7:pm. Mass of Christian Burial is Saturday at 1:pm at Burdette Hall.


Ronald Hall Jackson of Globe passed away January 29 at Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa. He was 73. He is survived by his daughter and 3 grandchildren.
Visitation for "Jake" Jackson will be held on Monday (February 10) at 1:30pm at Lamont Mortuary. The funeral is at 2:00.

Title 1 Parent Meeting Today

The annual Title 1 Parent Meeting will be held today (Wednesday) from 5 to 5:45pm in the High Desert Middle School Auditorium, just before the Globe School Board meets.

All Globe Unified School District parents are invited to attend.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide information to help you learn about the goals and purposes of Title 1; review the district’s Title 1 policy; and learn about the standards, curriculum and assessments.

You will also have the opportunity to make suggestions and to ask questions about policies, programs and activities.

Globe School Board Meets Wednesday

The Globe School Board meets Wednesday at 6:pm in the High Desert Middle School Auditorium.

Grant-in-Aid for Future Teachers

The Delta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is offering a grant-in-aid for students who are planning to pursue a teaching career.

Police Log

Yesterday afternoon Animal Control responded to a request for a welfare check on a dog on East Kline Street. The Animal Control officer called for assistance after being threatened by the dog's owner. When officers arrived Eddie Armijo became combative and assaulted an officer. An officer and Armijo were both treated by EMS. Armijo was then taken to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center. Charges are pending.

54 year old Patsy Hays was arrested late last night for DUI.

30 year old Patricia Woodard was arrested last night on a warrant for driving with a suspended license.

The Gila County Task Force arrested 29 year old Amber Carroll on a theft warrant.

Obituary

Hyacinthia Monica Altaha of San Carlos passed away January 31 at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. She was 40. She is survived by her husband Wesley; 2 daughters; 3 sisters; her brother; and 5 grandchildren.
The wake for Hyacinthia Altaha is Saturday (February 8) at 4:pm at the Altaha residence. The funeral is Sunday at 1:pm at San Carlos Miracle church.

Miami Senior Center Closed Tuesday for Plumbing Repairs

The Miami Senior Center is closed today (Tuesday) while some plumbing is being repaired.

The home bound will receive their meals today but lunch will not be served at the Center.

They hope to reopen on Wednesday.

Supervisors Meet Tuesday

The Gila County Board of Supervisors meets Tuesday at 10:am.

Gila County Attorney Bradley Beauchamp will present the Officer of the Quarter Award to Department of Public Safety Officer Seth Meeske.

There will be an update on the Treasurer’s Office delay in mailing out and collecting the 2013 property tax bills.

The Supervisors will consider a resolution supporting the National Community Health Partner’s submission of a grant application to the US Department of Veterans Affairs that would provide traditional housing for qualified veterans.

Free Computer Classes at Globe Library

The Globe Public Library is having free computer classes this month.

The Basic Computers class will be held  this Tuesday (February 4) from 10:30 until 11:30am. It will be held again on Thursday (February 6) from 2:30 until 3:30pm; on Tuesday, February 11 from 10:30 until 11:30; and Thursday, February 13 from 2:30 to 3:30.

If you need help setting up an email account, a class will be held on Tuesday, February 18 (10:30 to 11:30); Thursday, February 21 (2:30 to 3:30); Tuesday, February 25 and Thursday, February 28.

Yesterday Mesa Police arrested 52 year old Raymond Gerardo of Miami on a child support warrant.

The Gila County Sheriff's Office arrested 32 year old Amy Bradford on a failure to comply warrant for driving with a suspended license and displaying a false plate.

On Saturday the Gila County Drug, Gang and Violent Crimes Task Force assisted the Apache Junction Police Department at a residence in Roosevelt. 20 year old Michael Butler of Claypool  was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault and kidnapping.

On Friday the Gila County Sheriff's Office served 32 year old  inmate Daniel Toscano a failure to appear warrant for driving with a suspended license.

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 35 year old John Prall of Phoenix on North Broad Street for domestic violence/assault.

34 year old Jafus Classay, Jr. was arrested early Saturday morning on an assault warrant.

30 year old Aaron Edwards was arrested on a failure to pay warrant for false reporting to law enforcement.

On Friday 29 year old Jephthah Bender was arrested for domestic violence/disorderly conduct at a residence on Cactus Drive. Bender also had a failure to appear warrant for disorderly conduct.

23 year old Aeriana Sanchez was arrested for shoplifting at a business on Highway 60.

Officers arrested two people on Silver Street after a report of suspicious persons loitering near a disabled vehicle, blocking traffic. 

30 year old Aaron Edwards was arrested on a failure to comply warrant for false reporting to law enforcement. 21 year old Josiah Long was arrested on a failure to comply warrant for shoplifting.

42 year old Michele Carroll was arrested on a failure to comply warrant for driving with a suspended license.

Obituary

Effie Jo Ownsby passed away January 25. She was 87. She is survived by 2 daughters; 3 sons; 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service for Effie Ownsby will be held at 1:pm on Saturday, February 8 at Living Water Church in Globe.

Copper Rim Book Fair

The Copper Rim School library is having a Book Fair from Monday, February 10 through Thursday, February 13, and on Tuesday, February 18. The hours are 7:am to 4:pm and from 7:am to 7:pm during Parent Teacher conferences on February 12.

The books are for Pre-K to Young Adult.

AZ Game and Fish Accepting Heritage Grant Proposals

The Arizona Game and  Fish Department is seeking  proposals for Heritage Grant awards.

Grants will be awarded in two categories, environmental education and outdoor education.

You’ll find information and application forms at the Game and Fish website. 

The grants are financed from Arizona Lottery sales.

The Heritage Fund was approved by voters in 1990.

Proposals will be accepted until 5:pm on March 14.

Man Arrested for Shooting at Two Lanes

The Globe Police Department says a man is in custody in connection with a shooting late Thursday night at Two Lanes Bar.

William Polk was arrested in San Carlos. Globe PD obtained a warrant for attempted first degree murder, assault, and threats and intimidation.

The 31 year old  victim was shot in the right thigh. He is expected to make a full recovery.
