VFW Post Invites Veterans to Celebrate with Them This Weekend

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post on South Broad Street invites all veterans and guests to join them in celebrating Veterans weekend.

The post is open Friday at 4:pm, Saturday and Sunday at noon, and Monday at 10:am.

There will be music and a potluck dinner on Saturday at 7:pm. Bring your favorite dish.

A luncheon at noon on Monday will follow a Veterans Day ceremony at  Globe’s Veterans Park.


Tonto National Monument Free Admission This Weekend

The Tonto National Monument joins other National Park sites in honoring US military veterans and current members of the Armed Forces during Veterans Day weekend with free admission for all visitors from Saturday through Veterans Day on Monday.

The Monument is open every day from 8:am to 5:pm except Christmas.

Miami Override Passes

The Miami Unified School District override has passed.  The final votes were 738 Yes and 530 No.

The Miami School District says this means they will be able to continue art, music, P.E., band, junior high athletics and maintain class sizes.


Bridge Replacement on SR 77 Begins Today

The Arizona Department of Transportation begins a project today (Thursday) to reconstruct the Dripping Springs Wash Bridge. The bridge is 13 miles north of Winkelman on State Route 77.

Work will be conducted on half the bridge at a time, with one lane regulated by a traffic signal. Work hours will be 7:am to 5:pm Monday through Thursday.

Motorists will experience short delays with narrowed traffic lanes, a reduced speed limit and wide load restrictions.

The $2 million project is scheduled for completion in July of 2014.

Miami Library Closed Today; Book Sale Extended

The Miami Memorial Library is closed today (Wednesday) so that the staff can attend a Gila County Library District meeting. The library will reopen on Thursday at 10:am.

The Friends of the Miami Library have extended their Fall Book Sale to December 21.

Library hours are 10:am to 6:pm Tuesday through Friday and 9:am to 1:pm on Saturday.


Police Log

Yesterday Globe Police arrested 21 year old Brandon Miller for possession of prescription drugs.

30 year old Francisco Gonzales was arrested on warrants for child abuse, continued sexual abuse, furnishing harmful items to a minor and sexual misconduct with a minor.

51 year old Manuel Johnson was arrested on warrants for assault, disorderly conduct, harassment and criminal trespass.

Officers are investigating a fraud; an assault reported at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center; assault at a business on East Ash; a burglary at a residence on South Fourth Street; and a theft at a residence on Pinaleno Pass.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 66 year old William Lockwood on a contempt of court warrant for shoplifting.

Deputies are investigating a burglary at a residence on Black Warrior and an attempted burglary in the area of First Avenue.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office arrested 34 year old David Vidales of Globe on a child support warrant.


Obituaries

Tullie Allen Desmond of Peridot passed away October 30. He was 31. He is survived by his wife Debbie; his children Hilario, Nikia and Darius Terrazas, and Nisa and Tellie Desmond; his sister and 2 brothers.
The wake for Tullie Desmond is tomorrow (Thursday) at 4:pm at the Desmond residence. The funeral is Friday at 2:pm at San Carlos Miracle Church.

Ramona G. Cranswick of Miami passed away November 1 at Hospice of the Valley in Chandler. She was 93. She is survived by her sons Harold, Harry and Harley; and 3 grandchildren.
Visitation for Ramona Cranswick is Friday (November 8) from 4 to 6:pm at Lamont Mortuary. The funeral is Saturday at 11:am.

Trinidad Ruiz of Globe passed away November 3 at Heritage Healthcare Center. She was 92. She is survived by her daughter “Angie” Meeks of Globe; 2 sisters; and 2 grandchildren.
Rosary for “Trinie” Ruiz is Saturday at 1:30pm at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial is at 2:00.


Stapleton Wins Globe Council District 4

Mike Stapleton has won the runoff election in Globe Council District 4.

Unofficial results show Stapleton with 128 votes. Desmond Baker had 84.

Globe School Board Meets Wednesday

The Globe School Board meets Wednesday at 6:pm in the High Desert Middle School Auditorium.

The agenda includes possible approval of the annual School Facilities Board Capital Plan for Fiscal Year 2014.


Baby Story Time at Globe Public Library

Baby Story Time for infants from birth to 24 months is now being held on Thursdays at 10:am at the Globe Public Library.

Meeting for Parents of Home Schooled Students

The Globe Unified School District is holding a meeting next Tuesday, November 12, for parents and guardians of home schooled students.

The purpose of the meeting is to let you know about the rights your child has to Special Education Services.

The meeting will be at 3:30pm in the Special Education Office at the Mofford Activity Center.

Sullivan Sentenced to 4.25 Years

On Friday, November 1, 27 year old Iroquois Sullivan was sentenced to four years in prison for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sullivan was found to be in possession of a methamphetamine pipe when law enforcement personnel searched his home on August 16.

Sullivan was convicted of possession of drug paraphernalia on October 9, following a two day jury trial. In aggravation, the court also found that Sullivan had previously been convicted of four prior felony offenses.


Miami Boomtown Spree Committee Meets Tonight

The Miami Boomtown Spree Committee invites everyone in the community who would like to help organize one of the area’s most prominent events to attend a meeting tonight (Tuesday) at the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum. The meeting starts at 6:pm.

The Committee is currently planning to hold the Miami Boomtown Spree during the weekend of April 11, 12 and 13.


Miami Road Closed During Repaving

The City of Globe announces that Sullivan Paving is repaving Miami Road this week. They start today (Tuesday) and plan to finish on Thursday.

Miami Road will be temporarily closed between 7:30 and 3:30 while the work is being done.

Police Log

Last night Globe Police arrested 37 year old Bernard Dan for shoplifting at a business on East Ash Street. Dan also had warrants for shoplifting and trafficking in stolen property.

Officers are investigating a report of child abuse taken at a business on Prickley Pear Drive; shoplifting at a business on Highway 60; criminal damage at Harbison Field; theft at a business on Highway 60; and a report of harassment.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36 year old Julian Arrellin on a child support warrant and a contempt of court warrant for unreasonable speed.

A report of threats was taken at Pueblo Heights Mobile Home Park.


Obituary

Harold Victor, Sr. passed away Sunday at his home in San Carlos. He was 65. He is survived by his son Harold Victor, Jr.; and his daughters Nancy Timothy and Evelyn Longstreet.
Visitation for Harold Victor, Sr. is Thursday at 10:am at the Church of Jesus Christ in Peridot. The funeral is at 1:00.

Miami Police arrested 36 year old Johnny Licano for disorderly conduct/domestic violence, criminal trespass, and assault on an officer.

38 year old David Garcia was arrested for criminal damage and warrants for disorderly conduct and child support.

33 year old Brandy Moore was arrested for criminal trespass.

On Saturday Globe Police arrested 34 year old Shaun Pahe for public consumption.

44 year old Elvis Kinney was arrested on failure to comply warrants for criminal trespass and public consumption.

30 year old Patrick Newman was arrested  on Friday at a residence on South East Street. Newman was charged with domestic violence/disorderly conduct.

69 year old Diane McCollam was arrested on an outstanding warrant after a two vehicle accident Friday at Highway 60 and Radanovich.

Globe Police are investigating an assault reported at a business on East Ash; stolen vehicles reported at a residence on South East Street and a business on Highway 60; and fraudulent schemes reported at a business on Highway 60.

On Saturday the Gila County Sheriff’s Office arrested 30 year old Brian McGaha for DUI.

Deputies are investigating domestic incidents at Sunrise Mobile Home Park, Holiday Hills Mobile Home Park, and on Calle De Loma; burglaries in Six Shooter Canyon,  on Cherry Avenue, and on Scott Avenue; criminal damage on Obscure Way, Old Oak and McKinney; and harassment reported at Holiday Hills Mobile Home Park.

The Department of Public Safety arrested 29 year old David Hayes on a child support warrant.

24 year old Roxie Garcia was arrested on a warrant for false reporting and taking the identity of another person.

Gilbert Police arrested 22 year old Tyler Hamlet of Globe on a failure to pay warrant for possession and use of  drug paraphernalia.

Peoria Police arrested 30 year old Pablo Yzagere of  Bylas on a failure to pay warrant for possesion and use of marijuana.


Obituary

Francisco H. Oropeza of Miami passed away October 29. He is survived by his wife Esperanza; 11 children, including Betty of Globe; Jose, David, Juan, and Margarita Murrietta of Miami; Larry and Maria of Claypool; and Espie Swinney of Central Heights; his brother; 21 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
Visitation for Frank Oropeza is Thursday (November 7) at 9:am at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Rosary is at 10:00 and Mass of Christian Burial is at 11:am.


Twohey and Richards Arrested in Mesa for Safeway Drive-By Shootings

Two local men were arrested in Mesa on Friday in connection with the October 14 drive-by shooting at the Claypool Safeway parking lot.

An extensive investigation by the Globe Police Department has linked 19 year old David Richards and 19 year old Brandon Twohey to the shooting. Investigators were able to develop probable cause to obtain arrest warrants for both suspects. During the course of the investigation it was learned  that the men had left the local area and fled to Mesa. 

Investigators sought assistance from the U.S. Marshals East Valley Fugitive Task Force. Through various sources it was learned that the suspects were staying at a Mesa motel.

On Friday, the Fugitive Task Force and Mesa Police served the arrest warrants at the motel. Twohey and Richards were taken into custody without incident.

Both men have been charged with the drive by shooting, discharging a firearm at a structure, 6 counts of aggravated assault, multiple counts of misconduct involving weapons, multiple counts of unlawful discharge of a firearm, and miscellaneous narcotics violations.

Globe Hires New City Clerk and Finance Director

The Globe City Council has hired longtime city employee Shelly Salazar to serve as Globe’s next City Clerk.
Salazar currently serves as the Payroll Clerk. She replaces longtime City Clerk Gina Paul who retired in October.

Joseph Jarvis has been hired as Globe’s next Finance Director. Jarvis is a seventh generation Arizona resident who has served as a Budget/Management Analyst and Department Manager for organizations in Arizona and Florida.
He replaces longtime Finance Director Teresa Williams, who retires on November 8.


Globe Lions Club 'White Cane Drive' Saturday at Fry's

The Globe Lions Club will be at Fry’s tomorrow (Saturday) from 9:am to 5:pm for the annual White Cane Drive. Money collected will help people in the local area get needed eye exams and glasses.

If you have an old pair of eyeglasses that you no longer need, these are also being collected.


Police Log

Globe Police arrested 21 year old Brandon Miller for domestic violence/disorderly conduct after a disturbance on South Walliman Road. 21 year old Sara Brewer was also arrested. She had a DPS warrant for failure to appear on a charge of driving with a suspended license.

40 year old Dugan Polacca was arrested for public consumption on Mesquite Street.

Officers took reports of theft at a business on North Broad Street; a burglary at a residence on North Willow Street; and telephone harassment at a residence on North Main Street.

The Gila County Sheriiff’s Office arrested 36 year old Adrian Eylicio for domestic violence kidnap, aggravated assault with a weapon, felony endangerment, child abuse, and possession of a weapon during a felony offense.

25 year old Justin Durbin was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia.

54 year old David Hayes was arrested on a warrant for disorderly conduct.

Deputies took reports of  adult abuse taken at a residence on Wheatfields Road; burglary at a residence on Black Warrior; and harassing phone calls at a residence on Supai Road.
