Rural Counties Have Lost More Jobs Than Urban Counties

An article in the rural America newspaper the Daily Yonder says that four years after the beginning of the recession, job losses in rural counties are higher than those in urban or exurban counties. (Exurban counties are those beyond the suburbs of a city. They are in metropolitan regions, but about half of the people who live there are in rural settings.)

Rural counties had nearly 850,000 fewer jobs this December than in December of 2007. That’s 3.7% fewer jobs in rural America four years after the recession began.

Urban counties had lost 3.3% of their jobs four years after the recession. Exurban counties lost 2.9% of their jobs.

The county with the largest job loss was Yavapai County in Arizona. That exurban county lost around 8,800 jobs.

Forest Service Says Mobile Home Park Violates Policy

The Tonto National Forest is moving to shut down a 167-resident mobile home park overlooking Roosevelt Lake.

Woodall’s Campground Mangement blog reports that the Forest Service has decided that the lease of the land for the park violates its policy that bars private use of public lands. The park consists mostly of trailers owned by vacation homeowners.

The operators of the trailer park say the action will shut down the only sewage treatmant plant in the area. They say it could also dry up business at the marina.

The people with mobile homes in the park have until January 2013 to move them. But many of the homes are so old that they don’t meet modern standards necessary to relocate them.

Park manager Shari Harper says it’s not about losing homes, but the park brings about $2.5 million from outside Gila County into the local economy.

Reed Found Guilty in Domestic Incident

Yesterday (Thursday) a Gila County jury found 32 year old Wesley Reed guilty of aggravated assault, criminal trespass, threats and intimidation and criminal damage.

Gila County Attorney Daisy Flores presented the case to the jury.

On October 16, 2010 the former Young resident threatened his grandmother with a knife. He also threatened to kill his mother and grandmother separately from his use of the knife. Reed’s grandmother ordered him out of the houise. He left but came back later and banged and kicked at the front door. He then entered the home through a window.

Reed has 5 prior felony convictions and this offense was committed while he was on parole from his most recent conviction.

Gila County Attorney Daisy Flores says it is fortunate that no one was hurt, but a situation like this can easily escalate to where law enforcement is responding to a homicide or a victim with serious injuries. She says no one deserves to be subjected to this behavior. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence should call local law enforcement immediately.

Because of his extensive criminal history, Reed is facing a minimum of 7.5 years, and a maximum of almost 19 years in the Arizona Department of Corrections.

Wesley Reed is currently at large. Anyone with information as to his whereabouts should contact the Gila County Sheriff’s Office at 928-425-4449.
