A brainstorming session to try to keep a Boys and Girls club in Globe will be held tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Chamber of Commerce office. Stop by between 5:30 and 6:30pm. The club was originally under the San Carlos charter but that is no longer available.
The Boys and Girls Club was serving 40 youngsters a day with after school programs, and it offered an extensive recreation program last summer.

Public Meetings About Improvements to Cutter Road
The San Carlos Apache Tribe invites the public to attend one of two public meetings about safety improvements to Indian Route 6 and the corresponding Environmental Assessment. The first meeting is tomorrow (Tuesday) at Exhibit Hall in Bylas. The second is on Wednesday at the Council Chambers in San Carlos. Both meetings are from 6 until 8:pm and will include the same information.
The Tribe is conducting a Corridor Analysis report and engineering design plans to improve the safety and accessibility of Indian Route 6, also known as Cutter Road.

Roundtable Discussion Tuesday Night
Gila County Supervisor Shirley Dawson hosts another roundtable discussion tomorrow (Tuesday) in the Supervisors’ hearing room at the Gila County Courthouse. The discussion begins at 6:pm. Come early and enjoy a bowl of homemade soup.

Applications Taken for Clean Elections Commission
Applications are being taken for the Citizens Clean Elections Commission. The Commission oversees a public financing system for political campaigns and promotes voter registration efforts.
Since there are already two Republicans, two Democrats and two Maricopa County residents on the Commission, the current position must be filled by someone outside Maricopa County who is not a member of those two parties.

Chamber Announces Citizens of the Year
The Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award was announced last week at the Dream Manor Inn. This year’s award is shared by Jay Spehar and Mickie Nye.
Spehar was honored for his efforts in area water issues. He served on Globe’s Water Advisory Committee and helped Miami plan a new wastewater treatnment plant.
Nye was cited for his work on the Gila House, which offers transitional living quarters for families, and for the Boys and Girls Club, which offers after school and summer programs for youth.

Miami Council Meets Tonight
Miami Town Council meets tonight (Monday) at 6:30. The agenda includes a Public Hearing on an ordinance that establishes disconnection and reconnection fees of wastewater services. The Council may vote on the ordinance following the Public Hearing.

The Income Survey and the May 17 Election
Residents of the two sanitary districts between Globe and Miami have been asking about the Median Household Income Survey and the election that will be held in May.
Cobre Valley Sanitary District President Mary Anne Moreno says the two separate issues both have to do with the area getting a wastewater collection system. The income survey is necessary to get as much as possible of the system to be paid for with federal grants. The lower the average household income, the larger the grant may be. All information gathered in the survey is confidential.
In May voters will decide whether or not to approve the merger of the Cobre Valley Sanitary District and Pinal Sanitary District. Moreno says it’s hard to get a quorum of both boards of directors at every meeting and to have to always work with intergovernmental agreements. A merger would also simplify the process of seeking funding and writing contracts with engineering firms.
The election on May 17 would create a single sanitary district with one board of directors. The new district would be called Tri City Regional Sanitary District. It would cover the same area that Tri City Fire Department and the old Central Heights Fire District covered when they merged a few years ago.

First Friday Program About 'New Deal Food'
The First Friday program tonight at the Miami Library is related to the special Smithsonian Exhibit now at the Gila County Historical Museum. It’s called “Eating the Depression: New Deal Food” and it is presented by ASU professior Betsy Fahlman.
There is no charge for the presentation which begins at 6:pm. Arrive early and enjoy a bowl of hot soup as part of the presentation.

Scouts Collect Food for Local Food Banks This Saturday
This Saturday local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will be collecting food for local food banks. They will be outside grocery stores and also going door to door to collect canned and other non-perishable food items.
The goal of the drive is to help replenish the shelves of food banks after the holidays when many people might not otherwise remember those in need.

A free training workshop for people interested in becoming a National Weather Service Storm Spotter will be held this Saturday in Globe. It's from 1 to 3:pm at Gila County Emergency Services on Apache Avenue. To register call 402-8805.
You will learn how thuinderstorms work, how to identify cloud features associated with microbursts and tornandoes, visually estimate wind speeds, and how your reports tie in to warnings and advisories issued by the National Weather Service.
Anyone can be a spotter and if you like to pay attention to the weather, you’re encouraged to become involved.

The cost of the rabies shot is $10 plus the cost of a license. That’s $15 for an unaltered animal and $7 for a spayed or neutered animal.
The High Desert Humane Society of Globe will be there to show animals that they have for adoption.
State law requires that all dogs over 4 months old be vaccinated for rabies and licensed in the county you live in.

ABC15 Reports on Globe Crosswalk
ABC15 in Phoenix did a report this week about the crosswalk near Globe High School.
Two students have been struck by cars recently while trying to cross Highway 60.
Cars frequently fail to stop when people are in the crosswalk. Reporter Jay Reynolds saw several close calls himself and you can see a couple of them in his video report.
The Arizona Department of Transportation is responsible for the roadway. They told Reynolds that they didn’t know there was a problem, but they are willing to work with local government to fix it.
Globe High School Principal Cindy Parravano is afraid it’s only a matter of time before something disastrous happens. She says she will probably write a letter soon to the Department asking them to take some action.
'Dump the Drugs'
A “Dump the Drugs” event will be held Saturday, February 12 in the Fry’s parking lot. Drop off expired or unused prescription and over the counter drugs. Drugs may also be dropped off at the Globe and Miami Police Departments.

Punxutawney Phil Predicts Early Spring
Punxutawney Phil emerged just after dawn today to predict an early spring when he did not see his shadow. This is only the 16th time since 1887 that Phil has not seen his shadow.
The annual celebration is based on a German superstition that says if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on February 2—-the Christian holiday of Candlemas—-winter will last another six weeks.
Actually Phil's prognostication is decided in advance by 14 members of the Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle.
The South’s version of Pennsylvania’s groundhog—General Beauregard Lee—didn’t see his shadow either. That celebration takes place in Lilburn, Georgia.

Elva J. Polk passed away last week at Hospice of the Valley in Tempe. She was 49. She is survived by her husband Tracy; 2 sons; 8 brothers; and 2 sisters.

'Warm Up With a Good Book'
A Family Reading Night for Los Lomas and Miami Preschool students will take place Wednesday night from 6 to 7:pm at Las Lomas Elementary School. The event is called “Warm Up With a Good Book.”
Hot chocolate and cookies will be served in the cafeteria. Then Miami High School athletes and cheerleaders will read books in the hallways. After that the students will return to the cafeteria to receive a new book and a pair of green sport socks.
The special event is sponsored by Carlotta Copper Company.
Supervisors Meet Today
Gila County Board of Supervisors meets today (Tuesday) at 10:am. The agenda includes an Agreement for Energy Assistance for Renewable Neighborhoods Implementation with APS for $79,000. The Supervisors will also consider a Resolution to support the Copper Basin Coaltion and the Payson Community Prevention Council for their efforts to curb underage drinking.

Sidney C. Medlock passed away yesterday (Monday). He was 74. He is survived by his wife Lavon; his son; his daughter; his sister; and 2 grandchildren.
