GCC and ADOT Pre-Apprenticeship Program
Gila Community College and the Arizona Department of Transportation have formed a partnership to offer a Pre-Apprenticeship Program at the Gila Pueblo campus. Applications are now being accepted for 15 slots that are available. If more than 15 applications are received, interviews will be conducted for student selection. The program is for those who wish to pursue a career in highway construction.
The spring semester starts on January 12. Class schedules are available throughout the community, at all the campuses, and online at www.gilaccc.org.

Prescribed Fire Near Roosevelt Lake
A prescribed fire operation is planned by Tonto National Forest fire specialists for December 13-17 near Roosevelt Lake. It will be seven miles northeast of Punkin Center.
The purpose of the prescribed fire is to reduce the potential for large, catstrophic wildfires by targetting decadent stands of brush throughout the 17,000 acre project area. The goal is to treat 3,500 acres a year over the next several years.

Eva Marie Hollis passed away Thursday at Copper Mountain Inn. She was 85. She is survived by her son Robert Hollis of Globe; 2 daughters, including Diana Jones of Globe; and 2 grandchildren.
The funeral for Eva Hollis will be Wednesday at 10:am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Local fire agencies responded to a chimney fire on Bird Street last night. Damages are reported to be extensive but no injuries were reported.
Nobody was hurt in a single vehicle accident yesterday morning in the area of Kellner Canyon. The car was towed and 20 year old Vance Mata was cited and released for DUI.
A driver was cited after a vehicle-pedestrian accident Friday afternoon on Highway 60.
There were no injuries in an accident Friday afternoon in front of the Claypool Post Office.
Nobody was hurt when a truck hit a deer Friday night in the area of Highway 70/77.
There was a hit and run accident yesterday afternoon on Highway 60. 49 year old Rodney Doney later turned himself in for a Gila County warrant for possession of drug paraphernalia. Globe PD charged him for the hit and run.
Globe Police arrested 35 year old Jessica Lopez yesterday on warrants for failure to comply on charges of drug paraphernalia and child support.
27 year old Charles Moore was arrested for domestic violence/assault after he left the scene of a disturbance Saturday morning on South Hill Street.
A call Friday night about two people throwing objects at vehicles in the area of Beer Tree crossing resulted in the arrest of 20 year old Delbert Martin for underage consumption, and a 17 year old juvenile for underage consumption and disorderly conduct.

Gila County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a followup investigation in the area of Hershey Highway. Five stolen guns were located. The case is pending further investigation.

Miami Library Book Sale
The Friends of the Miami Memorial Library will hold their annual Fall Book Sale tomorrow (Saturday) from 9:am until 1:pm. All proceeds will benefit the Children’s Room and programs.

Candlelight Service for Lost Loved Ones
The Crossing Hospice will hold a candlelight memorial service for everyone who has experienced a loss. Gas Prices Inching Up
AAA Arizona says the price of fuel is inching higher. The statewide average for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline is just under $2.79. The national average is just under $2.88 a gallon.

Tip Your Firefighter and Police Officer Night
Globe Police and Fire Departments will take the place of waiters and waitresses Saturday at Judy’s Cookhouse and Irene’s Mexican Food from 5 to 9:pm.

Copper Cities Community Players Christmas Concert
The Copper Cities Community Players will present their annual Christmas Concert Saturday at 3 and 7:pm.

The Copper Basin Coalition is holding a meeting on Dec. 9th, at the Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce. The meeting will start at 12 pm.

Case Management Conference Set for Johns
A Case Management Conference has been set for Monday in Gila County Superior Court for 69 year old Ronald Hughes Johns. Johns is charged with the attempted murder of his neighbor Loren Eaton in Tonto Basin. The two men have been feuding for years about disputed property lines.
Police say that on May 5, Johns fired two shots at Eaton, hitting Eaton once in the back of the head. The other bullet struck one of Eaton’s horses. The horse was put down and Eaton was taken to a Valley hospital with serious injuries to his face and jaw.
Johns was charged with attempted murder, aggratvated assault, recklessly killing a horse and several counts of misconduct involving weapons. Johns says he fired in self defense. A trial date has not yet been set.

Prisoner at Private Prison Beaten Into a Coma
A prisoner at a private prison in Idaho was beaten into a coma while prison guards watched. A surveillance video leaked to the Associated Press shows the man pleading for help and banging on a prison guard station window, but no one steps out to help him.
Shortly after the beating stops, the cellblock door opens and the prisoner is checked for signs of life. He spent three days in a coma.
Idaho Correctional Center is owned by Corrections Corporation of America. Lawsuits from inmates claim that the company denies medical treatment as a way to cover up such assaults.

AZ Panel to Recommend More
Privatization
KPHO in Phoenix reports that members of a state commission say they expect to recommend that Arizona privatize at least some state parks and increase the number of private prisons.
Gov. Jan Brewer formed the Commission of Privatization and Efficiency earlier this year. It submitted a preliminary report a few months ago but is preparing a larger report that is due December 31.
Arizona Graduation Rates Decline
Arizona is one of only three states where graduation rates fell during the past decade. A report by America’s Promise Alliance shows that Arizona graduation rates fell from 75% to 71% between 2000 and 2010.
Nationwide, high school graduation rates went up 3%. The alliance didn’t find specific reasons for the decline in Arizona, but its chief executive officer says this should be a wake up call for the state’s leadership. She says better government leadership and community involvement are keys to improving education and graduation rates.

A juvenile was placed in the Gila County Detention Center under the same charges and then released to a family member.
